An essay is a (relatively) short piece of writing on a particular subject. Essays are also known as articles, papers, discourses, texts, commentaries, critiques, expositions, and (informally) pieces (assessment pieces). No matter what you’re studying, chances are you’ll have to complete an essay at some point.
Essays can be any length – typically 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 or more words are often seen in the Australian education system. The required length depends on the topic, what knowledge or skill the essay needs to demonstrate, and the weighting (how much of your grade it makes up). Word lengths are generally strict for a reason, so it’s best to be just a touch under the limit. However, some tutors allow you to go up to 10% over – consult your course handbook for details.
Structure is just one aspect of essay writing that students in Australia find difficult. An essay should not just be a random collection of sentences; it should flow well from beginning to end. It should have a clear beginning (introduction), middle, and end (conclusion). For those who have not formally been taught essay writing or composition skills, this can be tough.
Content can also be very tricky. Some essay briefs (instructions) ask you to compare multiple texts, or to summarise something in your own words. This can seem impossible if you don’t understand the source material. Of course, anything you quote or cite as a fact needs to be properly referenced. Most universities and TAFEs require you to use a particular referencing style, usually APA or Harvard. Law and legal studies students need to use the AGLC (Australian Guide to Legal Citation).
